Kewell hints at Liverpool exit
Reds winger says decision to forgo showdown with Man U was made by himself and the club
By Wang Meng Meng
IN THE strongest hint yet, Liverpool star Harry Kewell indicated that he could leave Anfield at the end of the season.

The left winger is in Singapore with Australia's national squad for Saturday's friendly match against the Lions.

He made that suggestion when he was at the Australian International School at Lorong Chuan yesterday afternoon for a coaching clinic.

With his contract expiring at the end of the Premier League campaign, it has fuelled talk of his future, especially as manager Rafael Benitez has rationed his Premier League appearances to just 10 games this season.

So, is he staying or leaving the club he joined in 2003?

'Of course I want to stay at Liverpool. It's a fantastic club with a great history,' said Kewell. 'But, if things don't work out, there are plenty of other clubs out there.

'I've had some good times and some bad times in my career. At this stage, I just want to play in the first team and enjoy my football again.'

There have been reports linking him to a switch to Celtic but the 29-year-old played down such talk.

'I've heard a lot of rumours about me over the years, but this is one that I've not heard about,' he said.

Another talking point was Kewell's decision to forgo Liverpool's big Sunday showdown with Manchester United in favour of international duty with the Socceroos.

'It was a decision both Liverpool and I made,' he explained. 'I need to get as many games as possible. And by coming here, I could get two matches.

'The manager is happy to let me join the Australia team.'

Competition for Liverpool's left flank is getting tougher, with Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Fabio Aurelio, John Arne Riise and Kewell all jostling for a slot.

But the Australian feels he is up for the challenge.

'I'm fine and I'm fit,' he said. 'I haven't missed a single training session yet and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season.

'We still have Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals. They are a great team. But Liverpool have made two of the last three finals. We have a proven record in Europe.'

Yesterday, a torrential downpour ruined the scheduled clinic for 30 students.

But Kewell, who wore a huge diamond-encrusted wedding ring and a Rolex watch, still took time out to mingle with the kids, sign autographs and pose for pictures.

Other Socceroos present were Michael Beauchamp (Nuremburg), Mile Jedinak (Central Coast Mariners), Nikolai Topor-Stanley (Perth Glory), Jade North and James Holland (both Newcastle Jets).

After sparring with the Lions at Kallang, Australia will take on China next Wednesday in a third-round World Cup (Group 1) qualifier.

The bulk of manager Pim Verbeek's squad hail from the Australian A-League.

Several European-based players were missing from the line-up, even though a ticket to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup is at stake.

Still, Kewell stressed that this is a good side.

'I'm really impressed with this team,' he said. 'I have been with them for only a couple of days, but they have left their mark on me with their never-say-die Aussie attitude.

'Our goal is to go to China and come back with three points.'
