KUALA LUMPUR - THE Umno Youth chief is taking to task former premier Mahathir Mohamad's son Mukhriz (right) for asking Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi to step down to assume responsibility for Barisan Nasional's dismal showing in the polls.
Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the Youth wing will take action against the newly-elected Jerlun MP, who is an Umno Youth executive committee member.
Datuk Mukhriz, he said, had contradicted the Youth movement's stand to support the PM. 'I consider Mukhriz's action as irresponsible. Umno Youth will take appropriate action as provided for under the party rules,' he declared yesterday.
He added that the Youth movement's executive council will discuss the unsanctioned action when it meets after the Cabinet line-up is announced, which is expected tomorrow.
PM Abdullah had last Friday said he would leave it to Umno Youth to take action against Datuk Mukhriz for asking him to resign.
Copies of the March 12 letter had appeared in several websites, although Datuk Mukhriz said it was a personal letter and that he had pledged support for PM Abdullah the day before he sent the letter.
But the chief of the Youth wing argued that the MP's action clearly contradicted his pledge.
He said: 'Even though he may have acted in his personal capacity, it is an irresponsible act...What Mukhriz has done is contrary to what I have stated, as our stand is to fully support the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.'
