The saga thus far
1990: Mas Selamat Kastari joined as a member of Darul Islam, a movement founded in 1948 that fought for an Islamic state in Indonesia in the 1950s. The movement is believed to have spawned the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) terrorist group.

1992: Was recruited into the religious council of the Singapore JI cell.

1993: Underwent military training in Afghanistan, then under the supervision of Zulkarnaen, a member of JI's central command and leader of its military wing.

1998: Travelled on a JI-sponsored one-month trip to Afghanistan, for the second time, to observe the Taleban system of government.

1999: Chosen by JI operations chief Hambali to take over as the leader of JI operations in Singapore.

December 2001

Fled Singapore after the Government's crackdown on terrorists that netted 13 JI members.

January 2002

Planned to attack Yishun MRT Station and a private bus shuttling US military personnel. Was thwarted by the police.

April 2002

Then-prime minister Goh Chok Tong revealed Mas Selamat's involvement in plans to hijack an American, British or Singapore aircraft to crash into Changi Airport that year.

February 2003

Picked up by the police for carrying false identification while on a bus in Bintan.

February 2003 to August 2004

Sentenced to 18 months in Pekanbaru, the capital of Sumatra's Riau province.

August 2004 to August 2005

Served additional time in Pasuruan prison and was released a year later.

February 2006

Caught in Malang, 40km south of Pasuruan, again for carrying false identification. Was deported back to Singapore. Served Order of Detention and detained under the Internal Security Act.

February 2008

Escaped from Whitley Road Detention Centre.
