THERE were a total of 66 train service disruptions that lasted more than 10 minutes in the past three years, said Minister of State for Transport Lim Hwee Hua.
They happened on the North-South, East-West and North-East MRT lines.
Out of these, 19 lasted for more than 30 minutes. Five of the 19 were caused by train systems faults. The rest were caused by track intrusions or passengers who activated the emergency button.
Mrs Lim gave these figures in Parliament yesterday, in reply to MPs' questions.
MP Lim Biow Chuan (Marine Parade GRC) had asked if the ministry would consider introducing laws to require public transport operators to compensate passengers in the event of a disruption.
Mrs Lim noted that commuters could seek refunds if train services were disrupted. Under the Rapid Transit Systems Act, the Land Transport Authority can impose fines of up to $1 million if operators are found to be negligent in such incidents.
