The time is ripe for the picking

Human resource director Jennifer Loh goes for the pick of the crop as she surveys rows of lime and mandarin shrubs at Far East Flora.

The shrubs are believed to signify prosperity and are must-haves in many Chinese homes during the festive season. Every year, about 4,000 pots of lime shrubs are sold at Far East Flora, accounting for 15 per cent of the average Chinese New Year sales.

Prices range from $18 for a small pot to $488 for a 1.8m-tall plant.

The nursery said it has seen a 10 per cent increase in sales so far, compared with the same period last year, partly due to the larger variety of plants imported.
