Chance for Singaporean to compete with world's best
IT IS not just the world's elite women golfers who will feature in the inaugural HSBC Women's Champions tournament, to be played at the Tanah Merah Country Club from Feb 28 to March 2.

The field will also feature a Singaporean, as the organisers have reserved a spot for a local player.

However, selection will be based on a qualifying tournament, which will be held at TMCC's Garden Course on Jan 16.

Amateurs with a handicap of two and below can participate, and the player with the lowest gross score will be Singapore's representative.

The selected Singaporean amateur will not take home any prize money from the tournament, which boasts a prize fund of US$2 million (S$2.88 million) and will have top players like Paula Creamer, Lorena Ochoa, Pak Se Ri and Natalie Gulbis.

But she will gain the experience and privilege of playing alongside the world's best women golfers - which is a gate-opener for the women's game in the Republic.

Gulbis has already hailed the tournament as 'the first Major' of 2008 and 'the first Major in Asia'.

The event mirrors the HSBC Champions men's tournament in Shanghai, which was won last month by Phil Mickelson.

Slots are open to all the winners from the 2007 LPGA Tour, plus leading money winners from other major Tours worldwide, who will chase a US$300,000 first prize.
