Children to learn about Olympic values in school
By Jane Ng
WINNING isn't everything.

And the art of losing graciously will be among the Olympic values schoolchildren will learn about when they take part in sports next year.

Learning about friendship, respect and excellence will also be part of their physical education curriculum or co-curricular activities, in line with Singapore's bid to host the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in 2010.

The games are for young people aged 14 to 18.

The Olympic Education package, made up of lesson resources, will be developed by the Singapore Olympic Academy at the National Institute of Education, and the Education Ministry.

It will be part of the Olympic Health Education Programme launched on Tuesday by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, at the Educating for Health Conference at the Orchid Country Club.

The programme aims to educate youth leaders on how important it is to be active, and about the Olympic movement - which aims to build a more peaceful world through participation in sports.

It will also look at topics such as how sports can help combat rising trends in obesity, the dangers of over-training, and the negative effects of using stimulants.

Said Mr Teo: 'The Olympics is about participation in sports and not just winning or losing. Through the participation you make more friends, gain the respect of peers and develop a healthy lifestyle.'

The programme will be rolled out in March.

At the conference, which was attended by 720 students, teachers and principals from countries in the region, students also had a taste of how they can blog their way to better health on the website www.yah.sg

The Health Promotion Board initiative has an online forum for students to discuss health issues and find out about events they can take part in.
