SPORTS fans around the world were left either reeling or rejoicing, after a series of shock results from Marseille to Cardiff to Shanghai over the weekend.
Yesterday, Formula One title favourite Lewis Hamilton failed to finish the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.
He had needed only to finish better than rivals Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen to become the first rookie to capture the drivers' championship.
But his challenge ground to a halt in a gravel trap on the 31st lap. Raikkonen won the race while Alonso was second.
The England rugby team had started the ball rolling at the World Cup on Saturday. The Roses stunned the heavily favoured Australians 12-10 in the quarter-finals, thanks to Jonny Wilkinson's boot. The fly-half kicked four penalties to send his team to a semi-final meeting with hosts France.
The French recorded the biggest shock of the Cup by booting out tournament favourites New Zealand 20-18 in Cardiff.
It was the first time they had beaten the mighty All Blacks in seven years.
The defeat cost Graham Henry his job. The coach will be replaced in December.
