ON THE BUS AND TRAIN
Stiffer penalties needed to stop eating, vandalism
I AGREE with Dr Lim Boon Hee ('Vandalism of buses blamed on lax enforcement'; ST, Oct 2) that there is a serious lack of enforcement by the bus and train operators to arrest eating and vandalism problems.

I am not a regular commuter. However, on the few occasions when I commuted by train, I came across teenagers eating, either in the train or on the platform. I told some of these people off and wrote to the principal of a school about a student eating on the platform.

However, as Dr Lim pointed out, the bus and train operators cannot expect the public to do the policing. Rather than lamenting the millions spent on damage repair, it is time the bus and train operators acknowledge the inadequacy of the enforcement system and impose stiffer penalties on those caught in the act.
