Close shave for statue

A 70-tonne granite statue of Buddha, which fell over face-down 1,300 years ago, missed hitting a rock by just 5cm. The 5.6m-tall sculpture was found buried in the south-eastern city of Gyeongju in South Korea and has been partially unearthed after months of work in May, news reports said yesterday.

State archaeologists estimate that it toppled over shortly after it was completed in the late 8th century, and say that the features remained intact because the front of the statue was buried in soil.
