I CANNOT stand back and accept the comments ('Appalling service at Thomson Medical Centre'; ST, Sept7) about the service provided by Thomson Medical Centre (TMC).
We are British permanent residents and have been in Singapore for three years. My wife gave birth in December to our second son at TMC. After a C-section, she remained at TMC for 10 days.
The service provided by Dr Yvonne Chan and her staff before and during the delivery was outstanding. The care provided after the birth was on a par with that provided by a top private British hospital, which would have cost more than $50,000, instead of $12,000.
We had our first son in Britain, and experienced a string of disasters. If those who moaned about TMC's service were to look at the service provided in other countries, they would see how lucky people here are to have such outstanding, clean and professionally-run facilities.
The staff work very hard, and I have watched this first-hand, with regular tea and coffee rounds. When we called the ground-floor cafe by phone, the tea, coffee, Milo or extra meals were delivered within 20 minutes.
The new dads can also do more to help hold or feed the babies, instead of getting their recovering wives or the nurses to do it, and expecting the nurses to get them Milo at the same time.
