It is an anxiety disorder that can develop after an individual is exposed to an extremely frightening or distressing event.
What are its symptoms?
Recurring nightmares, anxiety attacks, avoidance of reminders of the event and a refusal to discuss the experience are symptoms. Some patients take to substance abuse and become severely depressed.
Symptoms can develop immediately, within a few months of the traumatic event, or years later.
How is it treated?
Early intervention after the traumatic event includes counselling and support, but if the patient develops PTSD, a combination of medication and psychotherapy is used.
