- Sept 2, 1998: Then deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim is fired from the Cabinet, amid police reports that he is under investigation for sex and corruption allegations.
- Sept 20, 1998: Datuk Seri Anwar leads tens of thousands in a protest march in Kuala Lumpur demanding then premier Mahathir Mohamad's resignation. He is arrested hours later.
- Sept 29, 1998: Bruised, Mr Anwar pleads innocent to charges of sodomy and corruption. The police chief later admits to beating him.
- Nov 2, 1998: Mr Anwar's trial begins. He faces four counts of corruption.
- April 14, 1999: Mr Anwar is sentenced to six years in prison.
- June 6, 1999: Trial for charges of sodomy opens.
- July 28, 1999: Mr Azizan Abu Bakar, Mr Anwar's former family driver, tells the court he was sodomised up to 15 times by Mr Anwar.
- Aug 8, 2000: Mr Anwar is found guilty and sentenced to nine years in prison for sodomy, to be served consecutively with his six-year term for corruption.
- Nov 25, 2000: Mr Anwar is hospitalised for a spinal injury he claimed resulted from the beating by police two years ago.

- April 29, 2001: Mr Anwar's corruption conviction is upheld by Malaysia's Court of Appeal.
- May 24, 2001: Tun Dr Mahathir refuses to allow Mr Anwar to leave Malaysia for medical treatment for his spinal injury.
- April 2, 2002: Mr Anwar's final appeal against his corruption conviction concludes in the Federal Court.
- June 25, 2002: Then deputy PM Abdullah Badawi is officially named Dr Mahathir's successor in late 2003.
- July 10, 2002: Mr Anwar loses his appeal against a corruption conviction.
- April, 2003: Mr Anwar completes the corruption sentence, with one-third remission for good behaviour.
- Sept 2, 2004: Malaysia's Supreme Court overturns the sodomy conviction, freeing Mr Anwar from jail. A panel of three judges overturns the conviction by two to one, having found contradictions in the prosecution's case.
