Origins
Has roots in Darul Islam, a radical movement in Indonesia in the 1940s. Founded by JI leaders Abu Bakar Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar in 1993 in Malaysia.

Abu Bakar Bashir, JI's spiritual leader, preached in Malaysia and Singapore after fleeing Indonesia in 1985.
Mas Selamat Kastari, the leader of Singapore's JI chapter, was arrested in Indonesia and later deported to Singapore in 2006.
He escaped from the Whitley Road Detention Centre in February.
His son is believed to be studying at a religious school in Java.
