Chikungunya fever is a viral ailment spread by infected Aedes mosquitoes. While it is rarely fatal, deaths have been reported overseas.
It is common in countries like India, Africa, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Dengue-like symptoms include joint aches, chills, nausea, vomiting, rashes and fever.
It usually takes three to seven days, but sometimes up to 12 days, for a person to fall sick.
The disease usually lasts three to 10 days. However, pain can last for months.
There is no cure and you should use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers in countries where the virus is common.
While patients should rest, hydrate regularly and take medication for fever and pain, they should avoid taking aspirin which can increase the risk of bleeding.
