John Terry deserves the captaincy. The Chelsea man was left broken, after his penalty miss last week in the Champions League final loss. But he still got the first goal against USA.
England cannot do without David Beckham's delivery from set-pieces. It was the 33-year-old's free kick that landed on Terry's head for the defender to score after 38 dour minutes.
Wayne Rooney's temper is still a problem: In a meaningless friendly, he angrily blasted the ball into an advertising hoarding, made wild challenges and fired a verbal volley in the direction of the referee when booked.
Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard do not click together in midfield. It was no coincidence that Gerrard's goal came when Lampard was substituted by Gareth Barry, who set up the Liverpool man with a marvellous pass.
