Straits Times reader Joseph Steven snapped the scene from his 15th-floor HDB flat 100m away at Choa Chu Kang Avenue 5, and sent the pictures to this paper. 'I've never seen anything like it,' said the 42-year-old manager, who has been living there for over 10 years.
The fires are believed to have been sparked by the hot, dry weather of late. Two fire trucks brought the blaze under control within half an hour.
The temperature yesterday hit a high of 33.1 deg C - slightly lower than Tuesday's 34 deg C. This month's high was 34.1 deg C, reached on May 4.
Meanwhile, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) warned yesterday that pets are feeling the heat too.
'We've learnt of cases of dogs which have died from heatstroke recently,' said SPCA executive officer Deirdre Moss. To prevent heatstroke, dog owners are advised against leaving their pets unattended in cars, and to walk them during cooler times of the day.
'People should know that when it's hot for them, it's hot for their dogs too,' said Ms Moss.
