Steven Gerrard

Crunch time in the Champions League never fails to bring out the best in the Liverpool captain. Remember Istanbul 2005?
But, for once, Gerrard was far from his best - no thanks to Claude Makelele's close attention. A great pass set up Fernando Torres for a wasted good chance in the first half. The skipper finally stirred late on - but was denied a goal by Petr Cech's excellence.
Fernando Torres

With 30 goals in all competitions, one would expect the striker to tuck away the gilt-edged chance in the first half.
He hesistated despite being through, and Petr Cech saved well. His pace was a problem, but Ricardo Carvalho largely kept him under wraps.
Didier Drogba

Early signs that he could bully Jamie Carragher with his power soon evaporated. Martin Skrtel helped his vice-captain subdue the striker, their task made simpler by the Blues' long-ball tactic.
Drogba wasted an early inviting free kick, and often went to ground too easily - including a soft penalty claim.
Frank Lampard

Perhaps still troubled by his mum's illness, he started well - but looked a little rusty, faded away and emerged as one of the worst players.
He even gave away the ball on the edge of the box, when a long clearance punt would have sufficed, that led to Dirk Kuyt's opener.
