Countering previous accusations that bloggers were spreading lies and undermining public stability, newly appointed Information Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said Internet commentators played a key role in the recent polls by catering to voters who wanted an alternative source of news.
'If there is something newsworthy, I don't see anything wrong in them posting it,' he said. 'Everyone has the freedom to use the blogs as an information distribution centre.'
His comments mark a turnaround from the critical view the government used to take of bloggers, with his predecessor and other officials warning that new laws could be crafted to rein in bloggers who dispense malicious or false rumours that could stir tensions.
Blogs and the Internet have been credited with helping to turn the tide against the ruling Barisan Nasional in the recent polls. One blogger, Mr Jeff Ooi, was even elected to Parliament.
Datuk Ahmad Shabery said he planned to meet bloggers soon. 'Bloggers' views cannot be ignored,' he added. 'We've overlooked their roles and failed to understand their feelings.'
The minister's new stance won kudos from the online community.
'Way to go, Mr Info Minister,' wrote blogger S.K. Thew. 'I'm here to give you the benefit of doubt since you've shown the courage to engage us.'
