IF CJ7 is too sentimental for your liking, these five early Stephen Chow flicks are a quick detox.
They established his reputation as the master of the mo lei tau humour. We miss those days.
All For The Winner (1990)
Director: Jeff Lau and Corey Yuen
A legend is born. Chow's breakthrough hit is a spoof of Chow Yun Fat's God Of Gamblers (1989) in which he plays Sing, a country bumpkin who uses his psychic powers to become a master gambler.
Fight Back To School (1991)
Director: Gordon Chan
Chow's take on 21 Jump Street sees him going undercover in a school to retrieve a missing cop's pistol. The crusty Ng Man Tat is his embittered handler. Two sequels were spawned.
From Beijing With Love (1994)
Director: Stephen Chow and Lee Lik Chi
Another outrageous parody, this time spoofing James Bond with Chow as a low-rent secret agent - and part-time butcher - tasked to recover a stolen dinosaur fossil. Anita Yuen is his lady love.
God Of Cookery (1996)
Director: Stephen Chow and Lee Lik Chi
Chow is a celebrity chef who tries to redeem himself after being exposed as a fraud. Jim Carrey was at one point linked to a possible Hollywood remake. Nothing has happened since.
The King Of Comedy (1999)
Director: Stephen Chow and Lee Lik Chi
Chow's last known mo lei tau film. He plays a wannabe actor who falls for Cecilia Cheung's dance hostess. Hilarious and touching. Observant fans will notice the few lines of dialogue referenced in CJ7. But it's funnier here.
