How the various Pay Before You Play schemes work:
ATHLETICS
Athletes pay between 15 and 30 per cent, if at local meets they fall short of targets set.
If they meet those targets at the overseas meet, the SAA reimburses them.
Targets for preparatory overseas meets are set to attain progressively a certain mark at a major meet like the Asian Championships.
SAA pays the bill in full ...
If athlete's mark is less than 2 per cent away from the target set.
Athlete pays 15 per cent ...
If his mark is between 2 and 4 per cent from the target.
Athlete pays 30 per cent ...
If his mark is between
4 and 6 per cent from the target.
Athlete pays the whole bill ...
If his mark is more than 6 per cent away from the target.
SAILING
Sailors pay between 20 and 100 per cent, depending on their categories (from development to elite).
No reimbursement regardless of result.
Scheme implemented five years ago.
SWIMMING
Age-group swimmers under 17 pay 100 per cent of overseas competition costs.
They will be reimbursed if they win a medal - a full reimbursement for gold, 50 per cent for silver and 25 per cent for bronze.
Scheme implemented in the 1980s.
BOWLING
Development (20 per cent) and intermediate (30 per cent) squad players to pay for overseas competitions.
Covers only fixed costs (airfare and accommodation).
Full reimbursement if player qualifies for final.
Scheme implemented six months ago on a trial basis.
