Check if any parties are injured. If injuries are minor, move the vehicles to the road shoulder before exchanging particulars. In the case of serious injuries or death, call 999 or 995 and do not move vehicles from their original positions.
Identify landmarks, lamp post numbers, road distance markers and the direction of the expressway you are on to the police or SCDF so they know your exact location.
Things to note:
- date, time and place of the accident
- damage to and position of the accident vehicles
- registration number and description of the other vehicle
- weather and road conditions
- particulars of other parties and witnesses
If possible, take pictures of the accident scene and damage to both vehicles. It may help you avoid unnecessary disputes later.
Place an emergency-stop sign at least 20m behind the vehicle to give ample warning to oncoming vehicles.
If your vehicle cannot move, call your insurance company or any of its authorised workshops for help. The information is available in the car decal or card pocket.
Do not say yes when approached by tow trucks offering to repair your vehicle unless approved by your insurance company, or you may face claim disputes later.
