D.P. VIJANDRAN
In 1989, the emergence of pornographic tapes allegedly featuring D.P. Vijandran (right) led to the resignation of the then Malaysian Indian Congress secretary-general and deputy speaker of Parliament.
The tapes had apparently been stolen from his safe by burglars in 1988. Opposition MP Karpal Singh accused Mr Vijandran of being the man in the tapes and gave Parliament another tape in 1992, claiming it showed Mr Vijandran involved in sexual acts.
In 1994, Mr Vijandran was convicted on a perjury charge related to the tapes. He lost an appeal but the Court of Appeal ruled in his favour in 1998.

DATUK SERI ANWAR IBRAHIM
In September 1998, the former deputy prime minister and finance minister was expelled from Umno and arrested over allegations of sexual misconduct.
In 2000, he was found guilty of sodomy and jailed for nine years, to be served concurrently with another six-year sentence imposed earlier in connection with corruption and abuse of power. In 2004, he was freed after the Federal Court overturned his conviction of sodomy. He has insisted that the charges against him were fabricated by then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad and his allies to destroy his political career.

TAN SRI RAHIM THAMBY CHIK
In 1994, Malacca's Chief Minister Rahim Thamby Chik (right) was accused of having sex with an underage girl. The rising star of Umno quit as chief minister and Umno youth chief after the 15-year-old girl 'confessed', but the Attorney-
General cleared him of the allegations later.
Five years later, the girl told Malaysian newspapers that she had not had sex with Tan Sri Rahim. The latter said he suspected the allegations were part of a political conspiracy against leaders close to then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad.
