RIO DE JANEIRO - A FRENCH tourist died on Friday after falling off a tram tour in Rio while trying to take a picture as the streetcar passed through a traditional aqueduct, police told local Brazilian media.
The 24-year-old man, who was not identified, fell from the 'bondinho' after leaning out of the tramcar to take a picture of himself and losing his balance, Lieutenant Colonel Almir Cabral was quoted as saying. He died instantly.
The Lapa tram tour begins in downtown Rio, passing through the Lapa Arches aqueduct, which measures 64m high and 270m long, before reaching the Santa Teresa tourist area.
On days of high tourist activity, the streetcar usually exceeds its passenger capacity. -- AFP
