Six leaders quit Chiam's Singapore People's Party
Six members of the Singapore People's Party's (SPP's) central executive committee (CEC) on Saturday announced their decision to quit the party.
They included Mr Wilfred Leung, 36, and Mr Benjamin Pwee, 43, the first and second assistant secretary-general respectively, who at one point last year were touted to be possible successors to secretary-general Chiam See Tong, 76.
The other four who resigned were: organising secretary Ting Sze Jiang, 59; Mr Mohamad Hamim Aliyas, 48, and his wife Juliana Juwahir, 37, head of the Malay/Muslim Affairs Bureau and the women's wing respectively; and Mr David Tan, 65, who led the Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Businessmen Bureau.
The six sent a statement via e-mail to say that they tendered their resignations on Friday because of differences in opinion over the party's leadership style and direction.
