Murderer serving life term a free man now
Release after 13 years follows A-G's decision not to appeal against ruling
The convicted murderer who was granted his freedom because the crime took place before a key ruling on life sentences has been released from jail.
Mathavakannan Kalimuthu was said to be 'very grateful' after walking free on Wednesday, following the Attorney-General's decision not to appeal.
He had been due to spend the rest of his life in prison due to a 1997 ruling saying criminals handed this sentence could not be let out early.
But last week, the High Court decided that he should be freed after serving 13 years because the murder took place before the landmark judgment.
