World champion Kipketer works with local talent
Singapore athletics has been given a boost by one of sport's biggest names - Wilson Kipketer.
The Singapore Athletic Association's (SAA's) tapped the knowledge and experience of the three-time 800m world champion and Olympic medalist to work with Singapore's upcoming young athletes and coaches with a goal of developing Singapore's next athletic champions, the association said in a press statement.
Kipketer, 39, announced his retirement from competitive athletics in August 2005. Today, he continues to be one of the most influential role models in athletics. He visited Singapore during the 2010 Youth Olympic Games as an athlete role model, to mentor some of the 3,600 athletes competing at the YOG.
'When Wilson came to Singapore for YOG last year, he was impressed with some of our young athletes, and showed interest in working with them. We followed up with Wilson on the possibility of collaborating to develop our athletes and coaches, and we are very happy and honoured that he has returned to work with us,' said Mr Canagasabai Kunalan, SAA's Vice President, Training & Selection.
