Pictures: Pulau Bukom fire 'significantly reduced', says Shell
A fire on Pulau Bukom that forced Royal Dutch Shell to shut down some units and evacuate non-essential staff at its refinery is 'significantly reduced', Shell said on Thursday morning.
In a media statement at about 10am, Shell said that 'the fire had now been significantly reduced and is contained to within a bunded area'.
It added that the units in the vicinity of the fire remained shut down as a precaution, and a larger flare would be seen, but that this was a safety procedure and was no cause for alarm.
Earlier on Thursday morning, hundreds of workers made their routine 15-minute ferry ride to Pulau Bukom, even as they were unsure if they could continue work. Several returned to Pasir Panjang ferry terminal hours later, saying that work has been put on hold.
