Some 1,000 people gathered at the Singapore Soka Association headquarters on Sunday morning to remember those who died during the 9/11 attacks in the United States in 2001.

The Mercy Relief ceremony was timed at 8.50am - 12 hours to the 10 years since terrorists crashed two planes into the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center and one into the Pentagon.

The ensuing war after the attacks led to Mercy Relief's first ever overseas deployment to Afghanistan. It sent members to Spin Buldak in the southern part of the country in a Singapore Medical Relief mission.

At Sunday's event, religious leaders from Singapore's main faiths led the congregation in prayer, with many praying for mutual understanding and harmony.
