Speak Good English campaign to focus on children
Speaking broken English or Singlish to young children will not help them learn proper English. So make it a Pavlovian response, to always associate 'children' with 'good English', urged Mr Goh Eck Kheng, chairman of the Speak Good English Movement.
He was speaking at a media conference introducing this year's campaign, in its 12th year. This year, the movement focuses on children, and will be launched on Sept 10 at the Jurong Regional Library.
That weekend, the library will be turned into a carnival, with game booths by partners such as The Straits Times and language schools, storytelling sessions and parenting talks for instance.
One highlight for teens is a series of music sessions with local indie bands such as Caracal and Cove Red, whose members will also share how speaking well helps them succeed in the music industry.
