Man fined $25k for bribe offer

A MAN who offered a bribe to a technical manager of Esplanade Company for having recommended the company to buy stage backdrop equipment was fined $25,000 on Wednesday.

Tan Yen Kit, 40, admitted to corruptly offering 5 per cent of a purchase price of $638,860 equivalent to $31,843 to Mr Peter Bretherton as a reward for having recommended to Esplanade to buy theatre equipment from Desisti Asia on Aug 17, 2006.

A permanent resident, Tan was a system sales engineer with DeSisti for about three years before he left in July 2006. But he continued to be DeSisti's direct sales representative on a project basis.

The court heard that he was grateful to Mr Bretherton for recommending the project and offered him a token of appreciation.

He sent Mr Bretherton a short message service, asking if he was comfortable with the token of 5 per cent he thought of getting him. The technical manager did not respond and referred the matter to the management.

Tan could have been fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed for up to five years for corruption.
