By Jennani Durai

APPLICATIONS for the 2010 Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship, the postgraduate equivalent of the President's Scholarship, are now open.

The scholarship was set up by the Tanjong Pagar Citizens' Consultative Committee in 1991, to commemorate the contributions Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has made to the country.

There have been 28 recipients of this scholarship to date, who have pursued advanced degrees in fields such as law, life sciences and specialised medical courses.

Applicants must be Singapore citizens with strong academic records, demonstrate leadership qualities, and be active in social or community service, or sports. They may choose to study locally or overseas, and there is no restriction on the course of study.

Those who intend to pursue a PhD or Specialised Master's Programme are advised to choose an area of study or research that would be beneficial to Singapore. Those who intend to pursue a Master's in General Management should have at least four years of working experience.

There is no bond associated with this scholarship, but Lee Kuan Yew Scholars are expected to contribute toward the betterment of Singapore, Singaporeans and the community.
