Quake strikes off Indonesia

JAKARTA - A MODERATE 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's North Sulawesi province Thursday but there were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued, officials said.

The quake struck at 8.14am (0114 GMT, 9.14am Singapore time), 196km south-east of Melonguane at a depth of 53km, the meteorology and geophysics agency said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
