Puma buys Cobra

FAIRHAVEN (Massachusetts) - THE Cobra Golf brand owned by equipment manufacturer Acushnet has been sold to sports apparel firm Puma, which is making moves into the golf business, officials announced on Wednesday.

Acushnet plans to help with sales, production and distribution as well as deal with customer service issues following the sale, easing the Puma takeover.

Workers under Cobra are expected to retain their posts as Puma employees.

In 2009, Acushnet said it would cut back promotion of the Cobra brand to focus on other golf properties, notably Titleist and Foot-Joy.

Colombia's Camilo Villegas, who won last week at Palm Beach, plus Americans J.B. Holmes and Jason Gore and England's Ian Poulter, who won last month's World Golf Championships Match-Play title, are US PGA Tour players under contract with Cobra. -- AFP
