TEHERAN - HARDLINER Mahmoud Ahmadinejad took a strong early lead in his bid to be re-elected president, Iran's poll chief said after Iranians turned out massively to vote in Friday's pivotal presidential race.

The incumbent had chalked up 69 per cent of the vote after 35.2 per cent of ballot boxes were tallied, said Kamran Daneshjoo, chairman of the electoral commission at the interior ministry.

 
Iranians cast ballots in Iraq

BAGHDAD - THOUSANDS of Iranians living in Iraq or on pilgrimages to Shiite shrines were voting in the Iranian presidential election on Friday, said Iranian officials manning the polls said.

Twelve polling centres were scattered across Iraq for Iranians to cast their ballots, from Kurdish provinces bordering Iran, to the predominantly Shiite southern port city of Basra, and in the shrine cities of Najaf and Karbala.
