UK's NHS faces huge shortfall

LONDON - A REPORT says that a huge funding shortfall could force Britain to make cutbacks to its system of socialized health care.

The study published on Wednesday by the NHS Confederation claims that Britain's National Health Service faces a 15 billion pound (S$36 billion) deficit.

1st south Sudan rebels disarm

JUBA (Sudan) - FORMER rebels who fought a devastating 22-year civil war in south Sudan began laying down their arms on Wednesday as the United Nations' biggest demobilisation programme stepped up a gear.

It is hoped that a total of 180,000 former fighters will pass through the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme, a key part of the 2005 peace deal that ended the conflict between north and south in which an estimated 1.5 million people died.
