WASHINGTON - THE US government reported more than 400 new cases of swine flu on Monday to take the nation's total number of infections above 5,000, and said it remained on guard for an autumn upsurge.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the number of confirmed and probable cases in 47 states plus Washington's District of Columbia now stood at 5,123, up from 4,714 on Friday.

 
Chile flu cases now 5

SANTIAGO (Chile) - CHILE'S health ministry is reporting another child sickened with H1N1 flu, bringing the total number of cases in the country to five.

Deputy Health Minister Cecilia Morales says an 8-year-old boy is the latest confirmed case at a school where a 6-year-old classmate was already diagnosed. Classes at the school have been suspended for one week.

US awaits Iran's response

WASHINGTON - PRESIDENT Barack Obama said on Monday that he expects a response by the end of the year from his diplomatic outreach to Iran about stopping its nuclear program.

Speaking to reporters after more than two hours of talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Obama said the United States wants to bring Iran into the world community.

Fire forces EU HQ evacuation

BRUSSELS - A FIRE on Monday at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels forced bloc president Jose Manuel Barroso and hundreds of EU staff to be evacuated from the building.

Smoke billowed from the roof of the building as 40 firefighters were scrambled to the scene to deal with the blaze which broke out on the ground floor of the 16-storey building in central Brussels.
