LAGOS - NIGERIAN troops have freed three more Filipinos held hostage by militants in the Niger Delta, bringing the total number of the Asians rescued in the past two days to nine, an army spokesman said on Sunday.

'In continuation of our ongoing operation in Delta State, we located and freed three more Filipinos held hostage by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND),' Colonel Rabe Abubakar told AFP.

 
Smuggler dies in collapse
EL-ARISH - EGYPTIAN police recovered a body from the rubble of a tunnel used to smuggle goods into the besieged Gaza Strip on Sunday, a security official said.

'The body of a man in his thirties who appears to be Palestinian was found after hours of digging following the collapse of the tunnel which happened on Saturday,' the official said.

Rudd defends travel bill

MELBOURNE - AUSTRALIAN Prime Minister Kevin Rudd on Sunday defended a million dollar-plus bill for international travel that his ministers racked up during a parliamentary break.

Documents released last week revealed that government ministers spent almost A$2 million (S$2.25 million) during an eight-week parliamentary recess last year.

Australia to build solar plant

SYDNEY - AUSTRALIA plans to build the world's largest solar power station with an output of 1000 megawatts in a A$1.4 billion (U$1.5 billion) investment, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Sunday.

The plant would have three times the generating capacity of the current biggest solar-powered electricity plant, which is in California, Mr Rudd said during a tour of a power station.
