WASHINGTON - THE US Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved a US$91.3 billion (S$134 billion) measure to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through Sept 30 and to provide emergency aid to the struggling Pakistan government.

Despite concerns, the panel included US$80 million as President Barack Obama requested for shuttering the US detention prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where terrorism suspects are being held.

 
UK fails rape victims

LONDON - BRITAIN has one of the lowest rape conviction rates in Europe and is taking an unconventional step to fix the problem by asking advice from victims.

The government's Home Office, which is responsible for policing, has said authorities would survey rape victims about how they think the criminal justice system is serving them. It's one of a series of steps the government is taking to tackle the problem.

Body parts scheme, man jailed

LOS ANGELES - A MAN has been convicted in a lucrative scheme to buy and sell human body parts donated to a University of California medical school.

A jury found Ernest Nelson guilty of conspiracy to commit grand theft, grand theft by embezzlement and tax evasion.

9,000 claims in Madoff scam

NEW YORK - A COURT-appointed trustee unraveling Bernard Madoff's massive fraud signaled on Thursday that he may go after the disgraced financier's family to pay victim claims, which have grown to almost 9,000.

Legal action against the family 'is a matter that's being looked into,' trustee Irving Picard said during a telephone conference call with reporters.
