BRUSSELS - THE European Union opened antitrust investigations on Monday into seven airlines that fly lucrative trans-Atlantic routes as part of the Star and oneworld airline alliances, saying it suspected their cooperation was illegal.

The European Commission said the cooperation within the two groups on routes between Europe and North America 'appears far more extensive' than the joint approach on other routes.

 
NY Times gets 5 Pulitzers

NEW YORK - THE New York Times has won five Pulitzer Prizes for journalism, including one for breaking the news of a prostitution scandal that destroyed the political career of New York Gov Eliot Spitzer.

The Las Vegas Sun won the Pulitzer Prize for public service on Monday for exposing a high death rate among construction workers on the Las Vegas Strip.

Men bear brunt of jobs lost

OF THE 5.1 million US jobs that have evaporated since the recession began, men have lost nearly 80% of them, the Financial Times reports.

This has resulted in the widest gap between unemployment rates for men and women since recordkeeping began a half-century ago.

Dubai airport faces delays

DUBAI - DUBAI's airport chief said on Monday a new airport envisioned as the world's biggest passenger and freight hub could see its first flight pushed back further than planned.

In addition, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said the number of runways at the colossal Al Maktoum International Airport has been scaled back to five from the six slated originally.
