WASHINGTON - The United States will seek election to the UN Human Rights Council this year, the State Department said Tuesday, announcing the Obama administration's latest reversal of former President George W. Bush's foreign policies.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said in a statement that the administration will join the council to help make it more effective as part of President Barack Obama's desire to create a 'new era of engagement' with the international community.

 
Obama arrives in London

LONDON - PRESIDENT Barack Obama embarked on his Europe trip on Tuesday, with a hefty economic and national security agenda for his first journey across the Atlantic since taking office two months ago.

The president and first lady Michelle Obama arrived in London on Tuesday night local time. First up for the president was a summit of the world's economic powers to address the global financial meltdown.
