CAIRO (Egypt) - AL-QAEDA chief Osama bin Laden urged Muslims to launch a jihad against Israel and condemned Arab governments as allies of the Jewish state in a new message aimed at harnessing anger in the Mideast over the Gaza offensive.

Bin Laden spoke in an audiotape posted on Wednesday on Islamic militant websites where Al-Qaeda usually issues its messages. It was his first tape since May and came nearly three weeks after Israel started its campaign against Gaza's militant Hamas rulers.

 
UN chief renews ceasefire call

CAIRO - UNITED Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon called again on Wednesday for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.

British ship escapes pirates

KUALA LUMPUR - A BRITISH ship came under fire in a pirate attack in the Gulf of Aden, but managed to escape after a Russian warship came to the rescue, a maritime watchdog said on Wednesday.

The British-owned and Dutch-managed container vessel was chased for half an hour by the pirates, but managed to fend them off by increasing speed and making evasive manoeuvres.

Lebanon rockets hit Israel

JERUSALEM - THREE rockets fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel on Wednesday, causing no casualties, emergency services said, in the second such attack since Israeli forces launched their Gaza offensive.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Israel responded with artillery fire into south Lebanon, witnesses said.
