OSLO - VETERAN mediator Martti Ahtisaari insisted on Wednesday that all conflicts could be resolved and urged Barack Obama to strive to bring peace to the Middle East as he received the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize.

'All conflicts can be settled, and there are no excuses for allowing them to become eternal,' Mr Ahtisaari said as he received the Nobel gold medal and diploma in an Oslo city hall bedecked with red flower decorations.

 
Brown in 'save the world' slip

LONDON - PRIME Minister Gordon Brown sparked uproar in Britain's House of Commons on Wednesday by claiming to have 'saved the world', in a slip of the tongue seized on with glee by the opposition.

Mr Brown - who has rejected humourous comparisons with cartoon superhero Flash Gordon - was replying to taunts on his handling of the economic crisis from opposition Conservative leader David Cameron.

Euthanasia film sparks debate

LONDON - A FILM showing a terminally-ill man ending his own life at a Swiss clinic has reignited the debate about assisted suicide in Britain, where it was due to be screened on Wednesday.

Craig Ewert, a 59-year-old former university lecturer from the United States, suffered from motor neurone disease and chose to end his life rather than endure its 'nightmare' symptoms, his wife Mary said.

Newborn abducted from ward

PARIS - A PROSECUTOR says authorities have mobilised 150 police and issued an urgent appeal for help to track down a 2-day-old boy believed kidnapped from a maternity clinic in southwest France.

Prosecutor Erick Maurel says police were chasing leads from witnesses who said they saw a tall and 'corpulent' woman, about 40 and wearing a black overcoat, leave the clinic in the town of Orthez with the baby in her arms.
