HONG KONG - FORMER US president Bill Clinton on Wednesday praised the team president-elect Barack Obama has assembled but stopped short of directly applauding his wife's nomination as secretary of state.

Delivering the keynote speech at the conclusion of a meeting of business and political leaders in Hong Kong, he drew laughs from the audience for his veiled reference to Hillary Clinton.

 
Ban on Chinese kid's food

BRUSSELS - THE European Commission said on Wednesday it would ban imports of Chinese food for infants and young children containing soya after the recent discovery of melamine-tainted products.

Conjoined twin dies

LONDON - A WEEK-OLD baby has died after surgery to separate her from her twin sister, British doctors said on Wednesday.

Hope Williams died on Tuesday night. Her lungs were too small to support her breathing, the lead doctor said.

Thief pays up... 25 years later

VIENNA - AN ANONYMOUS thief in western Austria has offered 1,400 euros (S$2,141) in damages to the former owner of a moped the thief stole... 25 years ago.

Police in Bregenz said they had received an anonymous letter and 1,400 euros in cash from a person asking them to deliver it 'to the victim, in a penitent bid to make amends.' 'In 1983, I stole a moped from outside the Metro cinema,' the letter said.
