PARIS - FRENCH President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country holds the EU presidency, said on Thursday he will meet the Dalai Lama next month during a visit to Poland.

'The Dalai Lama is a distinguished man, a man who inspires profound respect and I will have the opportunity to see him in Poland on December 6,' Mr Sarkozy said.

 
G20 must 'lay foundation'

NEW YORK - US President George W. Bush said Thursday that world leaders will 'lay the foundation for reforms' at global economic crisis talks this week but said the effort was 'too large' for just one summit.

'The leaders attending this weekend's meeting agree on a clear purpose: To address the current crisis, and lay the foundation for reforms that will help prevent a similar crisis in the future,' he said in a prepared speech.

5m to take part in quake drill

LOS ANGELES - SOME 5 million Californians promise to drop to the ground, cover their heads and hold onto furniture Thursday as if an earthquake had just struck.

Don't worry, it's not real. But because earthquakes are a big threat to California, the state is starring in a mock quake disaster drill billed as the largest in US history.

Palin hinting at run in 2012

MIAMI - ALASKA Govenor Sarah Palin is sending signals that she is open to running for president in 2012, but another potential candidate is sending a different message: Republicans can't get ahead of themselves.

Ms Palin, this year's Republican vice presidential nominee, is going to talk to Republican governors on Thursday in a panel discussion called 'Looking Towards the Future: The GOP in Transition.' She's already making it clear that she wants to be a big part of that transition.
