ATHENS - SCIENTISTS are trying to catalogue hundreds of olive trees, some more than 1,000 years old, on the Greek island of Crete in a bid to save them from abandonment amid falling olive prices, an agronomy institute said on Wednesday.

 
Japan loans $220m for loos

SAO PAULO - JAPAN is extending a US$220 million (S$331 million) loan to Brazil to help improve the water supply of its biggest city, Sao Paulo, and sewage treatment in the state of Santa Catarina, its embassy said in a statement on Wednesday.

The deal was signed on Tuesday between Japanese ambassador Tatsuo Arai and Brazilian Foreign Minister Celso Amorim.

Wind farm gets 5-MW turbine

FRANKFURT - THE first of 12 turbines in a major German offshore wind farm project was installed Wednesday in the North Sea, the Alpha Ventus project said.

Following a one-year delay, the five-megawatt turbine was installed 45 kilometres north of the island of Borkum, but all 12 'are scheduled to be in operation by the end of this year,' the statement said.
