EU wants end to US oversight

BRUSSELS - A SENIOR European Union official called on President Barack Obama to give up United States' oversight of the Internet.

Major decisions on how the Internet is run are made solely by the California-based nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers - which is overseen by the US Commerce Department under an agreement that expires September 30.

Net governance revamp urged

STRASBOURG (France) - THE body in charge of assigning Internet addresses such as .com and .net should be shorn of its US government links from October and made fully independent, the European Union's information society chief said on Monday.
