SAN FRANCISCO - MICROSOFT and Nasa on Tuesday announced an alliance to focus the software giant's virtual WorldWide Telescope on space agency images of Mars and other celestial bodies.

Nasa and Microsoft will jointly develop a system to make high-resolution images and scientific data from Mars, the moon and elsewhere in the cosmos available for people to 'explore' online at worldwidetelescope.org.

 
Google's new 'smart' search

SAN FRANCISCO - GOOGLE on Tuesday modified its globally popular Internet search service to understand relationships between words, as the company bids to better grasp what Web users are looking for.

Along with taking into account intended meanings of search terms, Google beefed up results pages with longer snippets in summary paragraphs focused on what people appear to be seeking.

New wireless system for Italy

MILAN - ITALIAN defence firm Finmeccanica said on Tuesday it had won a S$532 million (260 million euro) radar contract from the air force that will allow for cutting-edge WiMAX Internet technology in Italy.

Selex Sistemi Integrati, a Finmeccanica company, will deliver a dozen long-range surveillance radars to the air force by 2014, replacing those installed during the late 1980s and early '90s, the company said in a statement.

Pull plug on 'e-cigarettes'

WASHINGTON - A US SENATOR urged Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulators on Tuesday to pull 'electronic cigarettes' from the market until the battery-powered devices are tested and proven safe.

The products, also known as 'e-cigarettes,' release a nicotine vapor into the lungs and are sold as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes that can even help smokers quit their habit.
