SAN FRANCISCO - MICROSOFT said on Friday that a control panel in its next-generation computer operating system will let users shut off Internet Explorer 8 and other built-in programs.

The news comes less than two months after the European Commission sent Microsoft a Statement of Objections accusing the US software giant of unfairly tying Internet Explorer (IE) to Windows.

 
Planet-hunter blasts off

WASHINGTON - THE United States late Friday launched a space telescope whose three-year mission is to find Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy.

The Kepler telescope blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, atop a Delta II rocket 10.49 pm (11.49am Singapore time), according to the US space agency NASA.

Saucy lyrics cause teen sex?

PARIS - CAN listening to sexually aggressive lyrics prompt teenagers to have sex at an earlier age? That's the issue raised by a new study, and it could unleash a fierce debate over whether a teen's music player is potentially risky and, if so, what should or can be done about it.

In an unusual piece of research, investigators at the University of Pittsburgh graded the sexual aggressiveness of lyrics, using songs by popular artists on the US Billboard chart.

Pay website to do homework

PARIS - 'You can't do it? We're here to help,' says the homepage of a new French website where children can pay for older students to do homework for them.

On faismesdevoirs.com (domyhomework.com), children will be able to buy answers to simple maths problems for 5 euros (S$9.77), while a full end-of-year presentation complete with slides and speaking notes will cost 80 euros.
