SAN FRANCISCO - Google said on Tuesday it is refining PowerMeter software that tells residents which devices in their homes are electricity hogs and which are being frugal with energy.

The announcement comes as the California Internet titan urges increased investment in a nationwide 'smart grid' electricity network to better track and manage power consumption.

 
Older mums more depressed

STOCKHOLM - FIRST-TIME mothers who give birth after the age of 35 are more than twice as likely as younger mums to suffer postpartum psychosis that could involve a danger to the newborn child, a Swedish study showed on Tuesday.

Birds shifting north

WASHINGTON - AS THE temperature across the US has gotten warmer, the purple finch has been spending its winters more than 640km farther north than it used to. And it is not alone.

An Audubon Society study set for release on Tuesday found that more than half of 305 birds species in North America, a hodgepodge of species that includes robins, gulls, chickadees and owls, are spending the winter about 56km farther north than they did 40 years ago.

9 gene clues to heart attack

PARIS - RESEARCHERS spanning three continents have pointed the finger at nine flawed genes after carrying out the largest-ever trawl through human DNA to search for inherited risks of a heart attack.

Variants of genes located in chromosomes 2, 3, 6, 12 and 21 boost the risk of myocardial infarction, according to five studies published online on Sunday in the latest issue of the journal Nature Genetics.
